ASOG, ADZU, and KAS hold training for CSOs from Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, and Zamboanga City

The Ateneo School of Government (ASoG) in partnership with Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU) with support from Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) held a training program with representatives of various civil society organizations (CSOs)from Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi (BaSulTa), and Zamboanga City last 19-23 September 2022 in Zamboanga City.
The Training of BaSulTa Civil Society Alliance for Inclusive Democracy focused on strengthening the capacities of the CSOs in policy formulation and coalition-building.
In his welcome message, Fr. Karel San Juan, SJ, University President of Ateneo de Zamboanga University highlighted that CSOs have great potential and capacity in influencing policies in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) with the objective of advancing the interest of the common good and deepening the processes of democracy.
Atty. Abdel Jamal Disangcopan from the Statutory Committees Support Services of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority led the discussion and workshops on identifying key policy issues in the BaSulTa and how the CSOs can participate in the policy-making process. Participants drafted policies related to youth participation, environment and sustainability, and the implementation of the localization law for public school teachers.

Ms. Alma May Bulanon of the Ateneo Center for Leadership and Governance of ADZU on the other hand focused her lecture on stakeholders mapping and coalition-building. The CSOs signified their interest to work together and formally build a coalition that will ensure grassroots representation from BaSulTa in the BARMM.
The training program was formally closed with messages from ASoG’s Dean Randy Tuaño and KAS’ Country Director Dr. Daniel Schmücking. Both thanked the CSOs for their participation and acknowledged their important role in their communities and in BARMM. The program was attended by 26 individuals representing 21 organizations from Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, and Zamboanga City
