Ateneo Reveals its Initiatives to Measure Energy Consumption

Quezon City, Philippines — The Ateneo de Manila University, in line with its sustainability goals, has implemented several initiatives that aim to measure the University's energy consumption.

Through the Ateneo Sustainability Guidelines and Policies, the University provides guidance for energy conservation through the use of energy-efficient equipment and the use of renewable energy sources. In line with this goal, the University has implemented several internal changes. It had shifted to energy efficient LED light bulbs and split-type air conditioning units a few years back and will continue to do so to mitigate energy consumption. Solar panels have also been installed in key locations to mitigate the projected power demand of the coming years.

The Ateneo also aims to reduce carbon emission and increase energy efficiency in transportation and power generation. In order to reduce emissions from tricycles around the campus, the University has introduced electric jeepneys (E-jeeps) as an alternative. The in-campus E-jeeps have been found to save up to 21.58 MT CO2e per year.

By consistently measuring its energy consumption, the University will be able to propose more sustainability-focused projects in the coming years. The Central Facilities Management Office (CFMO) and its unit representatives are in charge of monitoring and executing these initiatives within the Loyola Schools.
