Dr Cristina J Montiel, a Professor Emeritus at the Loyola Schools, has added another impressive honor to her illustrious career with her election to the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST).
Established in 1976, NAST recognizes outstanding Filipino achievements in science and technology. It also acts as the country’s scientific advisory body under the Department of Science and Technology.
Montiel has been with Ateneo de Manila for more than 4 decades and has served as a peace/political psychology professor. She has published more than 100 peer-reviewed academic papers on topics like Mindanao peace-building and the psychology of democratic transitions. In 2010, she received the Ralph White Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Psychological Association’s Peace Psychology Division. She was selected as an Outstanding Psychologist by the Psychological Association of the Philippines in 2016. Montiel has also served as a consultant for the Philippine government’s Commission on Human Rights and the Office of the Presidential Adviser for the Peace Process.
Election to NAST is one of the highest marks of distinction in the field of science and technology. Members, called ‘academicians’ are nominated by members of the scientific community. The academy is divided into different areas: agricultural sciences, biological sciences, engineering sciences and technology, health sciences, mathematical and physical sciences, and social sciences.
