11 Mar 2019
In light of the upcoming 2019 elections, the Ateneo School of Government spearheaded a Public Relations and Media Training for the faculty and researchers of Ateneo de Manila University last March 2, 2019. The activity aims to equip academics with the strategies and tools in engaging the media, which is necessary in promoting research and in informing the public. This is part of a wider initiative of the Ateneo School of Government on the evolving role of communications in policymaking and public policy delivery.
The training was facilitated by veteran journalist Ms. Melinda Quintos-de Jesus of the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility and communications expert Dr. Clarissa David of the Ateneo Policy Center.
In the morning session, Dr. David explained the rationale for academics in engaging the media. Aside from the opportunity to promote their research, media engagement could also be a way to increase the competitiveness and visibility of the University. Ms. Quintos-de Jesus then provided a brief background on the nature of the media.
The afternoon session was a discussion of practical tips and recommendations to prepare the participants for their media interviews. The participants consisted of faculty members from the Departments of Political Science, Communications, and Psychology, and researchers from Ateneo Human Rights and Ateneo Policy Center.
