Celebrating Employee Milestones: 47th University Service Awards (Part 1)

24 Feb 2025

Every year, Ateneo de Manila University hosts an awards ceremony to recognize employees who have reached a milestone in their years of service to the university. The first University Service Awards was held in 1978, in which 34 employees were honored. This year, on the 13th of March, the University will hold the 47th University Service Awards at the Ateneo Junior High School Covered Courts.

In a 3-part feature, we asked our service awardees to share their thoughts about their work in Ateneo and their experiences while working here. Let’s tune in to their responses as they share their stories on why they chose Ateneo, what keeps them going to have reached their milestone year, their favorite memory at work, a favorite spot on campus and an important lesson they learned throughout their years in Ateneo.

Part 1 features Carla Frances Peniera Perez and Katherine Bustamante.

You may read Part 2 and Part 3 here.

Carla Frances P. Perez  (5-year awardee)

University People Team and Organization Development (UPT&OD), Human Resources Cluster

Why Ateneo?

My career has always been about exploring different industries, and one of my goals was to work at a university. I’ve also had the privilege of working with international nonprofit organizations. I realized how much I missed that sense of purpose when I returned to the Philippines. Before my interview at Ateneo, I reached out to friends and colleagues to understand what the Ateneo experience was all about. What truly stood out to me was the University's mission to form people for others, guided by faith and service. Ateneo isn’t just a job—it’s a place where I can grow spiritually, personally, and professionally.

What keeps you going?

What keeps me going is the people I work with: the team that stands together through challenges, celebrates each other’s success and truly fosters a sense of community. My family and my deep belief in Ateneo’s mission are at the core of my drive. The priority areas in LID2030  set by Fr. Bobby Yap gives me clear direction and reminds me each day of the greater purpose of my work: to contribute to something beyond myself.

Favorite memory at work?

There are so many memorable moments, but a few that stand out are the energy during projects like job evaluations and workforce planning, the joy of welcoming new team members, and the camaraderie during milestone celebrations. But one moment I’ll never forget is dancing with Fr Jett Villarin SJ in a Christmas party during his term as President.

Favorite spot on campus?

Aside from the many great places to eat (hahaha), the bench outside Faber holds a special place in my heart. It’s where I pause to reflect while waiting for my family to pick me up from work. In those moments of stillness, I can take stock of my day and find peace. It’s a small, simple moment that offers a sense of balance and calm amid the busyness of campus life.

Most important lesson learned?

My biggest lesson is that balance is the key to true fulfillment. It’s easy to lose sight of what matters, but aligning our work, faith, purpose, and self-care creates space for real growth. This balance nurtures us in ways that help us thrive personally and professionally. I remember when I was feeling overwhelmed, I turned to the words of Fr Ben Nebres: “Not just to seek the good, but the greater good.”

It is a simple yet powerful reminder that shifts my focus, helping me aim higher and push beyond my limits. It inspires me to look for purpose in every part of my life. Through this journey, I’ve been fortunate to be part of the Ateneo community, where that sense of purpose and balance is deeply embedded in our daily lives.

Katherine Bustamante

Katherine Ann P. Bustamante (10-year awardee)

Grade School

Why Ateneo?

I initially decided to apply at Ateneo because of its green spaces and proximity to home. As years passed, I learned firsthand how my values aligned with the school's values, which made it easier for me to adjust and thrive. I believe in what the school stands for and its role in our society. I also appreciate how it continues to nurture my growth as a teacher and a person for others through various activities, especially those that go beyond classroom walls. I met many good people here, too, whom I call friends now. Ateneo Grade School has such a loving and supportive community, and it makes a workplace feel more like a home, one that I choose to be in.

What keeps you going?

I learned early on that teaching is my calling. I love what I do, and this keeps me going. I love how each workday is different and how working with children brings constant, consistent affirmation that I am in the right place in this big world. I get a sense of fulfillment when I see students learn and have fun, and at the same time, they realize how much they have improved and grown, and they start to feel proud of their accomplishments. I also like how students easily approach me to catch up and share stories or involve me in their projects outside of schoolwork. It's the day-to-day interactions that remind me of how I am in a privileged position to make a difference in their lives.

Favorite memory at work?

My favorite memories are Grade Level PowWow events where I am at work without working at all. My co-teachers and I unwind together after a long day, and we get to be ourselves without a filter. In Grade School, food, games, and occasional karaoke bind many people. Shared meals over random conversations, friendly banters, and stop-only-when-you're-out-of-breath singing are sure ways to learn more about each other, build camaraderie, and foster friendships for keeps.

Favorite spot on campus?

I enjoy the outdoors, so my favorite is the Rock Garden, especially when it's green. Taking a slow walk there or just admiring it from a distance is a breather. It's like a quick getaway from the concrete jungle, a much-needed escape on busier-than-usual days.

Most important lesson you’ve learned?

I learned to find God in all things and recognize how much there is to be grateful for each day. Because of this, it is easier for me to see and feel how much goodness there is around me.

The interviews have been edited for length and clarity.
