Dr Nicanor G Tiongson, Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas 2023

08 Mar 2023

Balagtas 2023

The School of Humanities is happy for the news that Dr Nicanor G Tiongson (AB Humanities, 1965; Tanglaw ng Lahi, 2009) is one of this year's recipients of the Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas, given by the Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMPIL).

The award for his lifetime's work in literary criticism. Dr Tiongson is the author of several books in Philippine theater, film, and literature, and is the editor in chief of the monumental CCP Encyclopedia of Philippine Art. Among his accomplishments are his pioneering studies of Philippine religious theater forms, the sinakulo and the komedya; the Uriain anthologies, his chronicle of the development of Philippine cinema from the 1970s to the first decade of the twenty-first century; and The Women of Malolos, a family history that is also an account of a significant moment in Philippine education and women's rights.

Before the pandemic, Dr Tiongson regularly taught parttime with the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies.

Congratulations are in order.

Tumindig. Tumaya. Magmahal.

"Kaya ngayong araw, higit sa pagtanggap ng diploma, tinatanggap ninyo ang isang mas mabigat na atas: ang maging katiwala ng pag-asa . It is of a future that is still being fought for. So I call on you: Tumindig. Tumaya. Magmahal. Stand up, especially when it is not popular. Take a risk, especially when the truth is being twisted. Love, especially when hope is being mocked by others."
