"Beyond the 'Gloss and Discipline'" Exhibit Goes to Prague
The Ateneo Martial Law Museum and Library (AMLML), in collaboration with the Ateneo Library of Women's Writings (ALiWW) and the Ateneo Department of Fine Arts, is proud to announce its participation in the upcoming 9th Annual Conference of the Memory Studies Association (MSA) in Prague, Czech Republic.

The commemorative project, “Beyond the ‘Gloss and Discipline’: Martial Law as Written by Women Journalists in the Philippines,” will be one of several special exhibits featured during the conference which will run from July 14–18, 2025 at the historic Karolinum, the seat of Charles University.
Taking its title from Paulynn Sicam’s evocative phrase written on 21 September 1987, the exhibit centers on the vital yet often overlooked contributions of women journalists in the Philippines during the Martial Law period (1972-1981) under Philippine dictator, Ferdinand E. Marcos, Sr. It foregrounds how women in media challenged state censorship, propaganda, and repression by documenting truths with courage, nuance, and a deeply feminist sensibility.
This exhibit is made possible through the graces of Women in Media Now (WoMeN) featured in the collections of Paulyn Sicam, Jo-Anne Maglipon, and Ceres Doyo archived in the Ateneo Library of Women’s Writings (ALiWW).
The Ateneo Martial Law Museum and Library (AMLML) would also like to acknowledge the support and contributions of the Department of Fine Arts, the Dr. Rosita G. Leong School of Social Sciences, the School of Humanities, the Rizal Library, the Office of the Assistant Vice President for University Partnerships and Internationalization, the Office of the Assistant Vice President for Research, Creative Work, and Innovation, the Office of the Vice President for Higher Education, the Office of the Vice President for Mission Integration, and the Office of the President of the Ateneo de Manila University.
AMLML is grateful for the opportunity to share this important work and to contribute to vital conversations on the role of women and media – then and now – in remembering, preserving national memory, and resisting authoritarian rule.
May we continue to honor and carry forward these stories that must never be forgotten, as we remain steadfast in defending our rights, freedom, and democracy.
