Earth Song (Mother the Earth), by Baguio-based artist Gail Vicente, is an installation project initiated by the late artist Roberto Villanueva in 1994. Roberto passed away the following year, leaving the project unfinished. Now, in 2025, his efforts are being re-enacted as part of the exhibition Gongs. Blood. Smoke. Earth. on view at the Ateneo Art Gallery until 3 August 2025.
As Roberto said, “Your handkerchief is a gift to be part of the process… As I receive the handkerchiefs, I knot them together and wrap them around a 200-meter-long rope to shape a spiral mandala, forming an image of a womb and representing a cosmos.”
Whether you are a mama, nanay, inay, ina, mommy, or mom—we are inviting all mothers to be part of the process of re-enacting Earth Song (Mother the Earth). We’d like to request participants to bring a handkerchief, scarf, hand towel, or any fabric that represents your hard work, struggles, and dedication as a mother.
This public program was organized in line with the exhibition Gongs. Smoke. Blood. Earth. On view until 3 August 2025 at the 3F Ateneo Art Gallery, Soledad V Pangilinan Arts Wing, Areté.
