Brief Description of the Topic:
Research about the experiences of women in male-dominated occupations (WMDOs) is extensive, yet fragmented and siloed across various literatures. This body of work often focuses narrowly on challenges or specific work contexts. Our integrative review advances the understanding of WMDOs by highlighting the strengths and benefits women bring to these fields, strategies that mitigate challenges and foster positive change, and theoretical perspectives that elucidate unique contextual dynamics and their impact on women's careers, teams, and organizations. Through a thematic and critical analysis of 254 empirical studies, we identify key themes related to challenges, benefits, strategies, and theories, highlight research gaps, and discuss implications for future research. This research was completed by Teresa Cardador (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign [UIUC]), Catherine Deen (University of New South Wales Canberra), Randolph Nerona (Griffith University) and Prof. Simon Lloyd Restubog (UIUC).
