Brief Description of the Topic:
Problem prevention behavior is pivotal for implementing preventive maintenance and reducing costly downtime. This study investigates how and under what conditions operations managers can be motivated to engage in more problem prevention behaviors. Drawing on the theory of proactive motivation, we theorize the indirect effect of proactive personality on problem prevention through perceived impact at work and the moderating role of developmental job experiences in this relationship. We employed a mixed methods approach via two studies to test (three-wave time-lagged survey) and contextualize (semi-structured interviews) our theoretical model. The results showed a positive effect of proactive personality on problem prevention behavior through greater perceptions of impact at work among operations managers with low levels of developmental job experience but not among those with high developmental job experiences. Our study has implications for hiring and selecting operations managers and for how to motivate less proactive operations managers to engage in – proactive – problem prevention behaviors.
