Insights on Development from the Philippines-China Economic Relations
ABSTRACT:
Owing to bilateral tensions in recent years, the economic relations between the Philippines and China have been spotlighted, invoking questions on the direction that the Philippine economy should take as shaped by these tensions. The presentation attempts to interrogate the picture of economic relations, shedding light on both potential and challenges and offering insights on the path forward. The presentation emphasizes the strengthening of institutions, the urgency of internal reforms, and a long-term strategic mindset—all of which are integral in not only strengthening the Philippine economy but also maximizing economic relations with China.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Tina S. Clemente is Professor at the Asian Center, University of the Philippines (UP), Diliman. She earned her Ph.D. at the School of Economics in the same university. Her research interests include development, China Studies, Philippines–China economic relations, and economic history. She was a program convener of the China/Strategic Studies Program of the UP Center of Integrative and Development Studies. Dr. Clemente is a former president of the Philippine Association for Chinese Studies and the first editor-in-chief of the Chinese Studies Journal. She received the 2022 Gawad Tsanselor Sa Natatanging Guro, the most prestigious award for UP Diliman faculty that recognizes excellence in teaching, research, and service.
