Intimacy in Performance in Japan
The Japanese Studies Program of the School of Social Sciences, in partnership with the Department of Fine Arts from the School of Humanities, invites you to join us for a lecture by Juri Ito, Japan’s first certified intimacy director, as she explores the evolving roles and languages of intimacy in Japanese theater, film, and media.
An intimacy director ensures that scenes involving nudity, physical contact, or simulated sex are created through clear communication, consent, and defined boundaries. Through her work, Juri is transforming how actors and directors approach these scenes, fostering both collaboration and creativity on set.
In this lecture, Juri will delve into the cultural challenges and opportunities surrounding intimacy in Japan, sharing insights from her experiences in the entertainment industry. Participants will explore how boundaries, consent, and collaboration intersect in performance art, and how these ideas are being reshaped across Japan and Asia.
