On Sundays, We Play: Book Launch & Film Showing
We are excited to invite you to join us at Escaler Hall at Ateneo de Manila University on Friday 4 October for the public film screening and book launch of ‘On Sundays, We Play’.
On Sundays, We Play is a captivating multimedia exhibit that documents the vibrant social world of volleyball-playing Filipina domestic helpers in Singapore. This project showcases how these women transform their identities on their Sunday rest days, trading their docile and subservient working selves to emerge as strong and athletic bodies in self-organized leagues held in the city's forgotten spaces.
This initiative, brought to life by a team of sociologists and photographers Dr Kristine Aquino, James Logan, Professor Amanda Wise, and Selvaraj Velayutham— celebrates the resilient spirit of our women OFWs. Ateneo Library of Women’s Writing (ALiWW) is proud to partner with Gantala Press to host the film screening and panel discussion celebrating OFW domestic helpers and Filipina women in sport.

After successful exhibitions at UltraSuperNew Gallery in Singapore (2023) and the University of Technology Sydney (2024), On Sundays, We Play is arriving at Ateneo de Manila University and will be exhibited from 2 to 16 October 2024 at the Ateneo Library of Women's Writings Reading Room, 1st Special Collections Building, Rizal Library, Loyola Heights Campus Ateneo de Manila University.
