Beyond the ‘Gloss and Discipline’: Martial Law as Written by Women Journalists in the Philippines

“Beyond the ‘Gloss and Discipline’” is an exhibit that explores the pivotal role of women journalists during the presidency of Ferdinand E. Marcos, Sr. On 21 September 1987, Paulynn Sicam used the phrase “gloss and discipline” to describe the Martial Law era, showcasing a strong feminine tone in her reportage. Sicam is one of many women who brought courageous reporting and unique perspectives when they chronicled the realities of a repressive regime while navigating the complex socio-political landscape of the Philippines and its media. From student to professional Filipina journalists, the exhibit highlights women’s contributions, challenges, and strategies they employed to deliver truth in a period marked by censorship, propaganda, and state violence. As it celebrates the bravery and impact of women journalists during this authoritarian period, this exhibit will also serve as a reminder of the importance of a free press in a democratic society. It hopes to inspire and challenge visitors to consider the role of gender and media in shaping public consciousness and resisting authoritarianism.
