The public is cordially invited to the second day of “Contacts and Continuities II: 125 Years of Philippine-American Encounters,” a conference series at the Ateneo de Manila University.  Day 2: Evolving Ecologies will take place on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at Escaler Hall and will feature the keynote address by Felice Prudente Sta. Maria followed by three panels and a tour of the special exhibition at the Rizal Library.

The panel “Food Production, Hygiene, and the Environment” features Nicolo Paolo P. Ludovice, Roberto N. Galang, and Erik Akpedonu. The discussions will center on the impacts of cold storage on urban health, the role of American multinationals in Philippine food production, and transformations in burial practices during the American colonial period.

“Mobility and Transportation” will include presentations by Patricia Irene Dacudao, Meynardo P. Mendoza, and Michael D. Pante. This panel will focus on the development of transportation infrastructure in American colonial Davao, the complexities of Philippine Airlines as an American enterprise, and the challenges of modernizing Manila's urban transport system.

Finally, “Bureaucratic Perceptions of the Environment and their Dangers in American Colonial Philippines” will feature presentations by Greg Bankoff, Brian Paul Giron, Bianca A. Claveria, and Diego F. Rebato. The discussions will focus on the colonial management of fire and indigenous agricultural practices, the ecological consequences of introducing Gambusia fish, the role of animals in medical research, and the colonial state’s responses to environmental hazards in Nueva Ecija, highlighting the complex interactions between colonial policies and ecological challenges during this period.

Interested parties may register through this link. Entrance to the conference and the panel presentations is FREE. Certificates of attendance may also be issued to onsite participants; kindly request these via the registration link.

This event will also be live-streamed on the main University YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/pNYR7qbU7LE.
