Learning Among 15-Year-Olds in the Philippines and the Covid-19 Pandemic: Insights from the 2022 Pisa

Geoffrey Ducanes, an Associate Professor at the Ateneo de Manila University Department of Economics and a recipient of the 2014 Outstanding Young Scientist award in Economics, and Leonardo A. Lanzona Jr., a Professor of Economics at the same university with a PhD from the University of the Philippines and postdoctoral studies at Yale University, authored a study titled "Learning Among 15-Year-Olds in the Philippines and the Covid-19 Pandemic: Insights from the 2022 PISA." The study analyzes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the learning outcomes of 15-year-olds in the Philippines using data from the 2022 and 2018 PISA assessments. The findings indicate significant and heterogeneous learning losses, particularly among males, public school students, and those without access to digital devices or real-time lessons during the pandemic. The study emphasizes the need for targeted remedial interventions to address these disparities and improve the overall proficiency of Filipino students.
