Learning Chinese with ChatGPT: How AI Tools Can Personalize the Learning Process
ABSTRACT:
Beginner Chinese learners often struggle with vocabulary that doesn't resonate with their personal interests, finding only broadly applicable terms in textbooks. Individualized vocabulary lists, while effective, are impractical for large classes. This lecture introduces a ChatGPT-based vocabulary-learning module designed to offer personalized, self-directed learning experiences. By integrating the Learning by Refraction and task-based language teaching frameworks, the module includes a range of activities that develop enabling skills and culminate in authentic language use. Here, ChatGPT serves as a personal AI tutor, encouraging students to reflect on their hobbies and interests and facilitating deeper contextual learning. This approach opens the door for educators to continuously refine AI integration in language education, showcasing the potential of AI tools to enhance the learning experience and create positive outcomes.
