As the world transformed during the pandemic, the media landscape in the Philippines and the region also transformed with the accessibility and popularity of queer media such as Boys Love, also known as BL. Originating from Japan, BL has now become a global phenomenon in recent years as these become increasingly localised and distributed to different audiences and their languages. From streamed web dramas to webtoons, BL has become a media genre that is challenging conservative and heteronormative representations of gender and sexuality in the region. In this roundtable, we'll hear from our guests, Akiko Mizoguchi and Thomas Baudinette, who will share their insights on how BL is transforming media landscapes, gender expression, queer culture and politics within Japan and the world.
Akiko Mizoguchi is a queer visual culture theorist who has published two award-winning books on BL in Japan, Theorizing BL as a Transformative Genre and its Dialogue Edition. These texts have been translated into Chinese and Korean, with an English edition coming soon. She is an Associate professor at Waseda University's School of Culture, Media and Society from the Faculty of Letters, Arts and Sciences. She also has a Youtube Channel where she converses with BL authors titled "BL with Akiko."
Thomas Baudinette is a Senior Lecturer in Japanese and International Studies at Macquarie University, Australia. A global expert on BL media and fandom culture, his latest publication is Boys Love Media in Thailand (Bloomsbury 2023). He is currently working on a new book about Japanese and Korean media fandom in the Philippines.
