Vignettes are literary pieces written to provide mathematics teachers with a sense of the relationship between the mathematics they teach and current research in and practical uses of mathematics.
This capstone project aimed to create mathematical vignettes intertwined with real-life situations in the Philippines. It aligns with the objectives of the ICMI Klein Project (www.mathunion.org/icmi/activities/klein- project/activities/klein-project). The four vignettes composed for this capstone project showcase various mathematical concepts. The first vignette, “Sungka Math Mastery: Exploring Numerical Patterns,” investi- gates numerical patterns by linking the traditional Sungka game to basic mathematical operations and pat- tern recognition. The second vignette, “The Application of Graph Theory in Quezon City’s Libreng Sakay Bus Routes,” explores graph theory principles through the analysis of public transportation routes. The third vignette, “Carrying Capacity of Metro Manila,” examines the mathematical aspects of carrying capacity and population growth. Lastly, the fourth vignette, “Dragon’s Gold Game,” illustrates combinatorics and proba- bility principles in a gaming context.
These vignettes offer mathematics teachers engaging resources that integrate mathematical concepts into real-world scenarios, enriching both their and their students’ understanding of mathematics in their every- day lives within the Philippine context.
