Reframing EDSA

As we approach the second anniversary of the election of Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. and as we witness sniping between his camp and the camp of Rodrigo Duterte whose administration actively disregarded human rights, how can we make sense of the aftermath of the 1986 EDSA Revolution? In this talk, Dr. Leland Joseph Dela Cruz argues that while the EDSA Revolution helped to restore the trappings of democracy, the persistence of informal institutions effectively recasts the practice of democracy in the Philippines away from textbook notions of democratic rule and practice.
One other challenge faced by advocates of democratic principles is the emergence of the politics of resentment against the EDSA class and all they stand for. Dr. Dela Cruz will end with some prescriptions for moving forward with the democratic project.
