Abstract:
Despite the abundance of the country’s natural wealth, poverty and unequal opportunities are still abound in the Philippines, with environmental degradation further exacerbating these conditions. This study explores how NGOs operationalize Holland’s (2012) ecological meta-capability concept to achieve sustainability goals. In-depth semi-structured interviews from nine representatives of NGOs working on poverty alleviation were conducted. Data analysis used thematic analysis with a critical realist perspective. Findings show that the NGOs engage their communities in all the different stages of their programs, creating a sense of empowerment that becomes the foundation for their ecological meta-capability. This is better understood by analyzing the interplay of Structure, Agency, and Culture in Archer’s (2020) Morphogenetic Approach.
