Does Bank Competition Affect Bank Risk-Taking?
Dr. Veronica B. Bayangos, the Director/Principal Researcher of the BSP Research Academy of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, investigates the interplay between bank competition and stability amidst the Covid-19 pandemic in the Philippines. Leveraging comprehensive data from 542 banks, she extends measures of bank competition and evaluates their impact on solvency risk across banking groups. Utilizing panel quantile regression, her findings demonstrate that while industry-level competition mitigates solvency risk and bolsters stability, individual bank risk profiles crucially influence this relationship. Dr. Bayangos' research underscores the nuanced nature of competition's effects, highlighting the significance of bank-specific characteristics and macro-financial factors such as diversification strategy, deposit growth, cost-to-income ratio, and real Gross Domestic Product growth. With a background in Development Economics from Erasmus University in Rotterdam and a wealth of experience in empirical macroeconomics and monetary policy, Dr. Bayangos brings a multifaceted perspective to her exploration of competition's implications for bank stability in the face of global challenges.
