Abstract:
The global scale of problems underscore the urgency with which businesses need to prioritize longer-range survival over short-lived economic gains. As leaders shape the future, courageous and inspiring leaders are called to rise to the challenge and ensure a sustainable pursuit of the welfare of people and the planet. However, due in part to the nascent stage of formal sustainability leadership programs, there is a dearth of studies on how such leaders are formed. Using narrative analysis of interviews with top-level sustainability leaders with the lens of critical realism, this study seeks to understand the formative experiences of sustainability leaders and how these contribute to their practice. From the findings, educators and practitioners can more intentionally and effectively pattern initiatives to create similar formative experiences and shape future generations of sustainability leaders.
