Do Non-Monetary Forms of Remittances Matter for Entrepreneurship Development? Evidence from Filipino Migrants in Japan
Mishael Joy Barrera, a Ph.D. candidate at Ritsumeikan University, focuses her research on remittances and migration dynamics. Her study examines the impact of both monetary and non-monetary remittances on entrepreneurship development among Filipino migrants in Japan. Utilizing micro-level data, the research highlights the significant role of non-monetary remittances in fostering entrepreneurial activities, particularly in overcoming financial barriers. It underscores the enduring value of tangible and intangible support compared to monetary transfers, which are often consumed quickly. The findings suggest that combining monetary and non-monetary support enhances households' ability to address immediate needs and invest in business ventures, contributing to entrepreneurship development.
