Global Economic Prospects Report presentation by World Bank Deputy Chief Economist Ayhan Kose

Dr Lalita Moorty, Regional Director of the Equitable Growth, Finance and Institutions, and Dr Ayhan Kose, Deputy Chief Economist and Director of the Prospects Group of the World Bank will be speaking at Ateneo de Manila University on Tuesday, 2 April 2024 at SOM 402, John Gokongwei School of Management Building, from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM. Dr Moorty will moderate a session in which Dr Kose will present the latest Global Economic Prospects Report. In particular, he will discuss current economic conditions globally and the implications for the region and the Philippines, and present a special focus chapter on investment accelerations, what they mean for key economic outcomes and what are the key enabling factors, based on a cross-country analysis spanning the period 1980-2020. Dr Kose is one of the lead authors of the World Bank’s recently released Global Economic Prospects (GEP) report for January 2024 which examines growth trends for the global economy and how they affect developing countries. About the speaker:
Deputy Chief Economist and Director of the Prospects Group of the World Bank
Ayhan Kose is the Deputy Chief Economist of the World Bank Group and Director of the Prospects Group. He also leads the Bank’s work on the global macroeconomic outlook, financial flows, and commodity markets. Mr Kose has written extensively on international macroeconomics and finance. His articles have been published in leading academic journals, including the American Economic Review, International Economic Review, Journal of Monetary Economics, Journal of International Economics, Journal of Development Economics, and many others. His latest book, Falling Long-Term Growth Prospects (co-edited), examines the evolution of global potential growth and its underlying drivers. His recent policy work focuses on global inflation, debt challenges, and business cycles.
Mr Kose is a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, a Dean’s Fellow at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, a Research Fellow at the Center for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), and a Research Associate at the Center for Applied Macroeconomics (CAMA). He taught at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business, INSEAD, and Brandeis International Business School. He has a Ph.D. in economics from the Tippie College of Business at the University of Iowa and a B.S. in industrial engineering from Bilkent University. A native of Turkey, Mr Kose was born and raised in Istanbul.

Ms Moorty is currently the Regional Director for East Asia and Pacific in the Equitable Growth, Finance and Institutions (EFI) Practice Group of the World Bank. Prior to this, she was the Regional Director for EFI in Europe and Central Asia. In her previous roles, she has been the Practice Manager for the European Union/Turkey and Manager in-charge for raising Funds for IDA. Ms Moorty joined the World Bank in the year 2000 and has worked in several regions – including East Asia and Pacific, Europe and Central Asia, South Asia and Southern Africa. She holds a Doctorate in Economics, with a thesis on Risks and Costs associated with Real-time and Net Payments Systems in the United States.
