Change and Continuity in China’s Politics: From Mao Zedong to Xi Jinping

 

Objectives:
The course enables participants to:

a. Compare and contrast the differing leadership styles of China’s paramount leaders.
b. Understand the nuances of China’s internal politics and its implications on its foreign policy.
c. Comprehend the unique situation of China as a socialist country while being one of the biggest trading economies in the world.
d. Develop an informed understanding of Chinese politics that is cognizant of its capacity for change whilst maintaining a degree of consistency.

Course Description:
The emerging state of the People’s Republic of China is one of the most significant events of the 21 st century. This short course is an introduction to the evolution of China as a political entity from its founding in 1949 to its current status as the second largest economy. It explores themes as the changes in China’s understanding of socialism and its impact on approaches to domestic and international politics.


About the faculty:
EG Dizon was a lecturer with the Ateneo Chinese Studies Program where he taught courses on the Government and Politics of China, and China’s Foreign Policy. He was previously a board member of the Philippine Association for Chinese Studies where he coordinated talks and webinars concerning China’s relationship with different regions of the world. His current research interests include China’s economic diplomacy and China-ASEAN relations.
