Mahar K. Mangahas, a distinguished Filipino economist born in 1944 in Manila, Philippines, presents a comprehensive exploration of poverty measurement and its societal implications in the Philippines through the lens of the Social Weather Stations (SWS) mission. As co-founder and Chair Emeritus of SWS, Mangahas draws on his extensive research background in rice economics, land reform, poverty, hunger, income inequality, quality of life, governance, and public opinion. The research delves into the unique Self-Rated Poverty (SRP) surveys initiated by SWS in 1983, resulting in the world's fastest household-survey-based system for tracking poverty, with 142 data points revealing insights into the economic history of the Philippines. Mangahas, a former Professor of Economics at the University of the Philippines, brings a wealth of experience, having served as President of SWS until 2021 and receiving accolades such as the 2019 Award for the Betterment of the Human Condition from the International Society for Quality of Life Studies. His commitment to public service is further recognized through awards like the 2011 University of Chicago Alumni Award for Public Service, highlighting his influential role in defining a nation's identity and restoring democracy through numerical demonstration of public will. Mangahas' weekly column, "Social Climate," in the Philippine Daily Inquirer reflects his ongoing dedication to enhancing public discourse and understanding.
