The Kuomintang’s Southeast Asian Stronghold: Anti-communism, Identity, and the Chinese in the Philippines

The Kuomintang’s Southeast Asian Stronghold: Anti-communism, Identity, and the Chinese in the Philippines, 1945-1970s

The Ateneo Ricardo Leong Center for Chinese Studies is proud to present, "The Kuomintang’s Southeast Asian Stronghold: Anti-communism, Identity, and the Chinese in the Philippines" on 22 February, 2023 10:00 a.m. at the Faura AVR, Ateneo de Manila University. This is in partnership with the History Department, KAISA para sa Kaunlaran and the Philippine Association for Chinese Studies (PACS). Our guest speaker is Professor Chien-Wen Kung of the National University of Singapore and author of the book "Diasporic Cold Warriors: Nationalist China, Anticommunism and the Philippine Chinese, 1930s - 1970s". This talk will tell us about the struggles of the Filipino-Chinese or the "Chinoys" during that time and how it shaped the Philippine government's anti-communism political history. This important part of our history has never been told and we hope to invite the public to be aware and understand the role of the "Chinoys" at that time.  To attend on-site, click this link to register http://go.ateneo.edu/KuomintangsSoutheastAsian

Dr. Chien-Wen Kung is an Assistant Professor of History at the National University of Singapore. He received his Ph.D. in History from Columbia University and studies Chinese migration and diaspora and China-Southeast Asia relations in the 20th century. His current book project is a history of Singapore-China-Taiwan cultural relations in the 1970s and 1980s.
