An Integrated Model of Green Consumption: Predicting the Usage of Menstrual Cups
by Alvin Patrick M. Valentin, PhD in Psychology Candidate
Abstract
Plastic pollution is a global environmental crisis that poses a huge threat to the health of people and marine ecosystems worldwide, and one approach that can help address this crisis is green consumption. Although there are several theories and models on green consumption, their limitations hinder their applicability to various green consumption behaviors. This study developed an integrated model of green consumption which was tested on the consumption of menstrual cups in the Philippines via structural equation modeling. Results showed that perceived quality predicted attitudes towards menstrual cup usage. Moreover, attitudes, perceived behavioral control, and self-identity predicted behavioral intentions, which in turn predicted menstrual cup usage. These findings provide empirical support for the integrated model and insights for governments, non-government organizations, and corporations in promoting green consumption to address the global plastic pollution crisis.
