Memo to :
The University Community
Subject :
Call for Nomination of Trustees
At its meeting to be held on 5 November 2022, the Members of the Ateneo de Manila University Corporation will elect:
(a) five (5) members of the Board of Trustees, to replace those Trustees whose current terms will end by then (or who, in the case of Mr. Wilson Sy, has recently resigned as Trustee), without prejudice to any number of them being re-elected as such for a new term of three years (from 2022 to 2025); and
(b) one member of the Board of Trustees to replace Mr. Lance Gokongwei in serving out the remainder of his current term. While his current term ends in November of 2024, he shall be vacating his position by November 2022. Mr. Gokongwei, who will have served ten years as a Trustee by then, believes that it is high time for other highly-qualified and deserving individuals to be given the opportunity to serve as trustees of Ateneo de Manila.
The University thanks Mr. Gokongwei and Mr. Sy for their many years of service and supports their decisions.
Pursuant to Section 3, Article III of the Corporation’s By-Laws, the Board of Trustees requests from the University community nominations of candidates for consideration and (re-)election to the Board. Nominations, together with brief descriptions of the nominees’ backgrounds and achievements, may be sent to the Corporate Secretary, Office of the President, on or before 30 September 2022, to afford the Board Committee on Membership sufficient time to go through the nominations and for the Board of Trustees to make the necessary recommendations to the Members of the University Corporation. You may send your nomination letters through email to jghofilena@ateneo.edu or president@ateneo.edu.
In making nominations, please consider the preference of the University for the full complement of the Trustees to be such as to present greater diversity on perspectives, knowledge and expertise in the Board. Accordingly, as guides for nominating, the following criteria of preference are presented:
- Increased female membership in the Board
- Trustees aged early 40s to 50s, while appreciative of the inputs which a senior business person with extensive international exposure and familiarity with the various regions of the country (their needs and strengths, etc.) may bring
- Competence in any one or more of the following fields:
o Digital technology
o Social media
Please also take into consideration: (a) the provision in Section 2, Article III of the By-Laws that Trustees must be graduates of recognized educational institutions or universities in the Philippines or abroad, and (b) Presidential Decree No. 176 on the Filipinization of Ownership, Control and Administration of Educational Institutions, which requires that membership in the Board of Trustees of educational institutions in the Philippines be limited to Filipino citizens. Note further that there is no rule against re-election.
The following Trustees will end their current terms of office by November 2022, even as Mr. Wilson Sy has already resigned. (Where appropriate, their previous consecutive terms are also indicated.):
