On Wednesday, November 27, 2024, Ateneo de Manila University (Ateneo) hosted an Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) Institutional Knowledge Dialogue Session with the ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance (AUN-QA). The event, held in The Areté's Ben Chan Room, was a landmark partnership that encouraged ASEAN universities to engage in discussion, share expertise, and develop institutional quality assurance mechanisms.
The day began at 10:30 AM with a formal discussion involving senior members of ADMU's Strategy and Quality Management Office (SQMO). Ms. Maria Rosario Banzon, Director of SQMO, was present, along with the heads of the office's key units: Dr. Maria Resurreccion Alejo, Head of Quality Management and Accreditation; Ms. Katherine Nicole Agustin, Head of Data Management; and Dr. Alma Maria Salvador, Head of the Rankings and Benchmarking. The discussion focused on ADMU's Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) system, data management procedures, and institutional benchmarking best practices, all of which play a vital role in advancing academic excellence and operational efficiency.
The AUN-QA Secretariat hosted a lunch for the AUN-QA team members and Ateneo delegates. The afternoon session resumed at 1:30 p.m. with the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health (ASMPH). The Dean's Council, which included Dean Cenon Alfonso, MD, and other notable members, as well as representatives from the Medical Education Quality Assurance Unit (MEQAU) and the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities (PAASCU), attended the meeting. The discussions centered on quality assurance mechanisms in medical education, training innovations, and benchmarking against international norms, highlighting the school's commitment to medical education excellence.
At 3:00 p.m., the AUN-QA team met with Ateneo President Fr. Roberto Yap, SJ, and Vice President for Higher Education, Dr. Maria Luz Vilches. The meeting allowed for high-level discussions about Ateneo's strategic direction and leadership initiatives in internal quality assurance. Fr. Yap and Dr. Vilches spoke about the University's goal of improving higher education management and developing a culture of institutional excellence.
The final session of the afternoon included senior administrators such as Dr. Benjamin Gerardo Tolosa, Jr., Vice President for Mission Integration, and Dr. Josefina Hofilena, Assistant Vice President for Undergraduate Education. They were joined by other executives in charge of graduate education, research, innovation, collaborations, and social engagement. The discussion focused on the application of quality assurance principles to curriculum design, research, sustainability efforts, and internationalization activities. Ateneo's leadership provided unique insights into their efforts to achieve meaningful educational and societal achievements.
Dr. Choltis Dhirathiti, AUN-QA Executive Director, headed the AUN-QA delegation, which comprised senior officials such as Mr. Korn Ratanagosoom, Chief Strategy Officer, and the two AUN-QA program officers, Ms. Sirapat Ardkla and Mr. Aldert de Vries. Throughout the meetings, the team fostered meaningful discussion concerning the new AUN-QA IQA Framework (2024) and Ateneo's quality assurance techniques. Supporting documents, such as the Report on the Redesigning of University IQA Systems, enriched the discussions by providing crucial context from previous ASEAN-wide projects.
The session concluded with the AUN-QA team departing for Seda Vertis North at 5:00 PM, indicating the successful completion of the day's discussions. The discussion underlined the importance of collaboration and shared learning in improving higher education quality assurance across the ASEAN region.
