University Community Engagement Policy
As of 26 September 2024
In order to fulfill its various missions as a Filipino, Catholic, and Jesuit University, Ateneo de Manila will actively engage various communities and partners through its teaching, research, and service.
Community engagement includes social and environmental engagements with external partners towards development and sustainability.
These communities and partners include marginalized communities, the national and local governments (particularly the local governments where the Ateneo de Manila's campuses are housed), non-government and civil society organizations, cultural institutions, multilateral and bilateral development organizations, other academic institutions and academic networks, and religious organizations.
The University engages with these communities and partners through teaching, research, and service.
- The University recognizes that communities and other external partners can help enhance the formation of students and employees to become persons-for-others. To this end, the University will engage with these communities and partners through various exposure, outreach, and service-learning projects that are part of academic subjects, co-curricular activities, or other formation programs. Representatives from these communities and partners will also be invited to speak in various classes and other activities to enhance students’ learning. Students' experiences in the various community engagement programs will be processed and integrated into the different curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular programs. The University will do its best to assess the impact of these formation activities on students and employees and design future engagements with enhanced impact in mind.
- In its mission to preserve and promote the truth, the University will engage in research for and with these communities and partners, under a spirit of “co-production” or “co-generation”.
- The University will provide direct service to and with these communities and partners based on the existing resources and expertise found within the University with respect to the needs and priorities articulated by these communities. Recognizing its role as an academic institution, priority will be given to capacity building and research for social and cultural development institutions or organizations.
In order to deepen relationships with existing partners, priority will be given to communities and partners that various units of the University are already engaged with. Nevertheless, the University remains open to engaging with new partners who share the same values as the University and will work with the University towards the fulfillment of common goals.
The University seeks to maximize the positive impact its community engagement efforts will have on its partners. To this end, the University will do its best to monitor and evaluate the impact of these efforts on its partners and design future engagements with enhanced impact and sustainability in mind.
In support of the University’s strategic priorities as reflected in Lux-in-Domino 2030, the University will prioritize partnerships to advance Educational Reform and Transformation, Universal Health and Well-Being, Integral Ecology, and Bridging Cultural Divides.
In order to support these initiatives, the University has various offices and resources in place to support, promote, enhance, and synergize diverse community engagement efforts and partnerships. The Office of the Assistant Vice President for Social and Environment Engagement for Development and Sustainability (OAVP-SEEDS), under the direct supervision of the Vice President for Mission Integration, is the principal university-level office that strategizes, synergizes, helps promote, and helps enhance, the social and environmental engagements of the university. Units may undertake community engagement efforts on their own but are asked to coordinate with the OAVP-SEEDS.
Through its partnership with communities and institutions, the University seeks to enhance its ability to be a force for good.
