Policy Statement on Academic Freedom
Issued 2 April 2024
Statement of Commitment
As a Filipino, Catholic, and Jesuit institution of higher learning, the Ateneo de Manila University upholds and exercises academic freedom, consistent with the declaration, in the 1987 Philippine Constitution, that "Academic freedom shall be enjoyed in all institutions of higher learning."
Academic freedom encompasses the rights of each educational institution to determine for itself on academic grounds who may teach, what may be taught, how it shall be taught, and who may be admitted to study. These prerogatives align with the other Constitutional edict on the right of all citizens to quality education.
The University respects and upholds each faculty member’s and student's right to individual academic freedom within the ambit of institutional academic freedom. The University's policies, procedures, and guidelines, which address many facets of teaching, learning, and research, demonstrate this dedication.
