Organizational Sustainability

Campus Flora

The University is dedicated to ensuring the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of the campus ecosystem. By highlighting the need for increased awareness and appreciation of urban biodiversity, efforts to research campus flora and fauna enables the formation of measures to protect these from anthropogenic disturbances.

As trees are a vital part of the campus and should be managed properly, the University follows a system for planting, maintaining, and removing trees which includes promoting, protecting, and propagating native tree species which are chosen to complement the existing wildlife.

Since 2016, it has been University policy to plant and propagate endemic tree species in the proper locations on campus. The Campus Ground Advisory Committee (CGAC), under the Office of the Vice President for Administration, reviews any proposal that may affect the balance of biodiversity, and the Campus Master Plan and recommends actions based on this review. The Central Facilities Management Office works closely with the CGAC as well as the AIS, the Department of Environmental Science, and the Department of Biology to maintain a Campus Tree Inventory.
